Canadian Champions Visit Ottawa

Children’s Miracle Network Champions Program Presented by Walmart Canada

Canadian Champions Visit Ottawa

-For Immediate Release-

March 1, 2018, Ottawa – On Monday, March 5, the Nation’s Capital will play host to an outstanding group of young ambassadors, the Children’s Miracle Network Champions presented by Walmart Canada. The Champions program is designed to educate communities on the life-saving work being done at member hospitals and the role Children’s Miracle Network plays in supporting that work.

Each year, Children’s Miracle Network hospitals identify a remarkable child to serve as their Champion. As ambassadors, these 13 Champions represent the more than two million children and youth treated by Canadian pediatric hospitals each year. Their stories showcase the incredible advances being made in children’s health care in our country, and applaud the courage and resilience of these Champions and their families in overcoming an illness or injury.

Once again, the Canadian Champions will travel to Ottawa to celebrate not only these young ambassadors, but also the vital role our country’s pediatric hospitals play in improving the lives of our children from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

Following the Ottawa visit, the Canadian Champions will join a group of U.S. Champions in Orlando, Florida for Children’s Hospital Week 2018.

The Canadian Champions begin arriving in Ottawa on Saturday, March 3 and have a full roster of special activities before they leave for Florida Tuesday morning.

We invite our friends in the media to join us for one, or all, of the following activities on Monday, March 5:

8 a.m. to 10 a.m.: Walmart Welcome Party and shopping spree at Walmart Baseline store, 1375 Baseline Road

10:30 a.m. to noon: Parliament Hill tour

6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.:

Children’s Miracle Network Champion Farewell Dinner  at Ottawa Marriott Hotel, 100 Kent Street

The CHEO Foundation can assist in organizing photo opportunities and interviews with these amazing kids, their families and Children’s Miracle Network representatives.

CHEO’s very own Champion Morgan MacIntyre will be front and centre with the other Children’s Miracle Network Champions during the visit. Morgan has been a CHEO patient since she was 13 months old after being diagnosed with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), a rare genetic disorder that impacts her immune system. Now 17, Morgan still requires regular treatments and has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy and bilateral Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. In the face of these challenges, Morgan has grown up to be an exceptional young woman who is active in the farming community, loves helping her family raise Simmental and Angus cows and is looking forward to attending university.

Morgan looks just like any healthy teenager, but with her compromised immune system it takes her much longer to recover from an illness. Even a cold or slight fever can become serious. Morgan’s spirit and strength will shine as she represents CHEO at special events throughout the coming year.

The Children’s Miracle Network Champions Program presented by Walmart is a celebration of pediatric health care across the continent. Each Champion brings their own special story of courage and strength that is just one of thousands from their home town, their province and their country. We look forward to giving them a warm Ottawa welcome, and ensuring their visit is a memorable one as they embark on the experience of a lifetime during their year as Champions!
