Children’s Miracle Network Champions Program Presented by Walmart Canada. Champions from across Canada coming to Ottawa.

March 16, 2017, Ottawa – Children’s Miracle Network Champions presented by Walmart Canada is an awareness program designed to educate communities on the life-saving work being done at member hospitals and the role that Children’s Miracle Network plays in supporting them. Each year, Children’s Miracle Network hospitals identify a remarkable child to serve as their Champion. As ambassadors, these patients represent more than two million children and youth treated at Children’s Miracle Network member hospitals each year in Canada.

This year the Canada’s 13 Champions will travel to Ottawa to take part in our country’s 150th Anniversary celebration. Their time in Ottawa will be a celebration not only of this incredible group of ambassadors, but also of our country’s pediatric hospitals and the vital role that they play in improving the health of children from coast-to-coast.Read the stories of Canada’s 13 Champions here:

Following their time in Ottawa, the Canadian Champions will join the 52 U.S. Champion counterparts in Orlando, Florida for the 2017 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Momentum event.

The Canadian Champions will start arriving in Ottawa on Saturday, March 18th and will have a full schedule of events before they leave for Florida early Tuesday morning.

Monday, March 20th will be an exciting day filled with wonderful activities and photo ops. Here is a rundown of where the Champions will be:

• 8 a.m.– 10 a.m. – Walmart Welcome Party and surprise at Train Yards Walmart, 450 Terminal Ave.
• 10:30 a.m. – noon – Parliament Hill tour and group photo with the Prime Minister.
• 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. – Canadian Museum of History.
• 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. – Children’s Miracle Network Balloon Reveal and Champion Farewell Party.

We strongly encourage our friends in the media to join us during the activities on Monday for photo ops and interviews with these amazing kids, their families and Children’s Miracle Network representatives.

CHEO’s very own Champion Jacob Randell will be front and centre with the other Children’s Miracle Network Champions during the visit. At the age of five Jacob was diagnosed with atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumour. This rare brain cancer meant Jacob required a 17 hour surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. Part of his treatment included physiotherapy to learn how to walk and eat again. He was later diagnosed with Schwannoma, a genetic condition which causes tumours to grow on nerve endings. Last year, Jacob underwent esophageal surgery to help with trouble swallowing. Medically, Jacob has been through a lot, yet he remains a happy, loving and inspiring young man. Here is Jacob’s video becoming CHEO’s Champion:

The Children’s Miracle Network Champions Program presented by Walmart Canada is a celebration of pediatric health care across the continent. Each Champion brings their own special story of courage and strength that is just one of thousands from their home town, their home province and their home country. We look forward to giving them an amazing Ottawa welcome, and making sure their stay is as memorable for each of them as each of these amazing kids will be for us.
