RBC Race for the Kids raises $285,237 for youth mental health services at CHEO.

OTTAWA – 09/24/2017 – The inaugural RBC Race for the Kids in Ottawa was held this morning at Wesley Clover Parks. During the celebration ceremony Tina Sarellas, Regional President and Jorge Useche, Vice President, Ottawa Specialized Commercial Markets from RBC Royal Back presented a cheque in the amount of $285,237 to the CHEO Foundation which will support youth mental health programs at CHEO.

The first RBC Race for the Kids was held in 2008 in New York. The Ottawa event has been added to a series of RBC Race for the Kids events that will take place in 15 cities in eight countries in 2017. To date, the races have raised over $27.9 million for children and youth charities.

Close to 1,800 participants took to the 5K and 10K all-terrain routes and the 2K Family Fun Run. RBC employees were a big part of the enthusiastic crowd who came to run, walk and have fun while raising money to support programs and services for children and youth facing mental health challenges.

“We are so thrilled at the amazing turn out for our first year in the nation’s capital,” said Tina Sarellas, Regional President, RBC Royal Bank. “We couldn’t have picked a better partner than CHEO to help bring this event to life. The money raised today will help CHEO and their community partners reduce barriers many youth are facing by helping to identify mental health issues more quickly so youth can get the support they need sooner. On behalf of RBC, I’d like to thank everyone who helped make the RBC Race for the Kids in Ottawa an outstanding success.”

“As the demand for mental health services continues to grow in all areas of the hospital, the importance of community support grows right along with it,” said Kevin Keohane, President and CEO of the CHEO Foundation. “We want to thank RBC for their community leadership. By recognizing the need, and bringing this wonderful event to Ottawa, RBC is making a difference in the lives of families who need specialized care and support. We also want to thank all of the participants and volunteers who made the RBC Race for the Kids a huge success.”

On the heels of this successful event was the announcement that RBC will continue supporting this event in Ottawa to benefit CHEO through 2019. This is a major advance in local efforts to deliver better, faster care for the children, youth and families in our region.
