September 14, 2017 was an unseasonably warm evening, perfect to be Between the Lights at Metropolitan Brasserie and the 700 Sussex Courtyard enjoying savoury treats, premium libations and an entertaining live auction to benefit cancer care and research at CHEO!
Some of Ottawa’s movers and shakers from local community groups and supporting sponsors like Alti Construction, Mattamy Homes, Main and Main and EllisDon were all decked out in Black and White and made some generous bids in support of cancer care and research at CHEO.
The month of September is designated as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and during the festivities revelers took pause to hear from Dr. Lesleigh Abbott who talked about her work at CHEO treating kids with cancer. Darlene Mercer, mother of Ryan Mercer, a CHEO oncology patient who inspired the event, shared her family’s experience. Ryan was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood bone cancer that requires a treatment protocol that includes compressed chemotherapy and radiation. Darlene’s hero, Ryan, attended sporting a dapper bow tie and his trademark freckles and sparkle. We want to thank the tireless organizing committee headed up by Casey Dowling, Ryan’s cousin, for their hard work. More than $20,000 was raised at this inaugural gala, and everyone at CHEO is excited to watch this event grow into 2018 and beyond.
